Visiting Nurse Association of the Pikes Peak Region Records 1908-1995

Records, primarily reports to the board and monthly meeting minutes, of the Visiting Nurse Association of the Pikes Peak Region, a health care oriented organization established in 1907 and in operation until 1986. Interested in all aspects of nursing and health care, the Association was instrumental in establishing and/or maintaining many public health programs in Colorado Springs and El Paso County such as clinics for the needy, dental clinics, child welfare clinics, school nursing, community health education, and professional home health care. Materials in this collection provide good insight into health and the evolution of health care in the Pikes Peak region through much of the 1900s.

The work of the Visiting Nurse Association was initiated in 1907 with a parish nurse from St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, paid privately by a Mrs. Fitch in memory of her husband, attending to individuals in Colorado Springs who could not afford professional health care. In 1909 financial support for the nurse was assumed by a group of women and the organization was named District Nurse Association.
